Family route: The hills of April
description
Las Lomas de Abril are located in a secluded and magical forest north of the municipality of Castielfabib. Although the route is not very long, it is worth traveling to this peaceful corner to enjoy its surroundings and the treasures it hides.
We start the walking route from the starting panel, going into the Val del Agua ravine; the sandstone rock walls accompany us on both sides of the path.
We reach a first crossroads where we turn right, fording the ravine to briefly ascend to the rock shelter that gives the route its name, where we will find some cave paintings and interpretive tables that explain their value and heritage interest.
A little further up we can extend the detour to an old stone corral that takes advantage of the rock overhangs of another shelter.
We retrace our steps to return to the crossroads and resume the main route uphill through a magnificent forest of rocks, holm oaks and pines that leads us to an old and large sheepfold (Aprisco), we will access it through a narrow passage between a large rock and a stone wall, its green rocks and moss carpet the surroundings.
Just a little further up we find some agricultural buildings that make us reflect on how these people lived in such a remote place; if we go down a little we will find a large defensive wall, whose use has not yet been defined next to the Barranco de los Fantasmas (Ravine of the Ghosts).
We climb again to tackle the last stretch of the route in search of the forest track that will comfortably take us downhill to the start of the route.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
To access the start of the trail there is a stretch of just over 6 km of forest track in good condition, it is not advisable to access with low vehicles or after days of rain.
The most complicated section of the access road is the last kilometer, so we can drive there, park, and walk the last kilometer to the start of the trail, enjoying a beautiful sandstone forest environment.
